Futuropolis Winners – 2023

Our first place, Oluwafemi Olagbenro – University of Brighton

Femi’s approach to design was focused on sustainability in the material use and design approach. Creating a design with a hollow core allows for effective passive cooling and energy efficiency. His form allows air filter through the building and uses the principle of stack effect. He also used the site the most effective as he positioned all amenities within a third of the land space given. This means that more of such structures can be provided within the space allocated which saves resources.

2nd position, Alih Hamzah – ABU Zaria
Designed three towers with a large base connecting all towers. The base services the three towers by housing shared amenities within its 5 floors. Design concept takes the form of a ship carrying goods. The 5 story base acting as the hull. And towers acting as the goods. The wave like cladding depicts the waves of the ocean. Lagos is a coastal city, hence the ship reference.
Third Position – John Adeweso – MSc. student of Obafemi Awolowo University. Ife.
His design concept consists of the showcasing the African culture with the use of a basket pattern shown from the facade which doubles as a solar shade device which contributes to sustainability and energy effficiency in the building. The wavy extrusion acts as the definition of the front elevation giving it a signature look.
